Autism communication is broader than spoken words
A speech-language assessment looks at how a child understands language, expresses choices and needs, shares attention, plays, uses gestures and communicates across familiar settings. Speech clarity is addressed when it is one of the child's functional priorities.
Some children communicate through speech, gesture, pictures or a speech-generating system. DARC can consider AAC without requiring a child to wait until every speech option has been exhausted.
