What speech and language looks like at 2
By age 2, most children have around 50 words and are starting to combine two words together ('more milk', 'daddy go', 'big dog'). They point to pictures when named, follow simple two-step instructions, and show clear interest in communicating with familiar adults. Speech may still be unclear but the range of communication attempts should be growing.
Every child develops at a slightly different pace. But if your 2-year-old has fewer than 20 words, is not combining any words, is not responding consistently to their name, shows frustration when trying to communicate, or recently lost words they previously had — these are signals worth acting on now rather than at the 2.5 or 3 year review.
Why 2 is a critical age for speech support
Age 2 falls within the optimal window for early language intervention. The brain's language networks are actively forming. A speech-language assessment at this age can identify whether the concern is a simple expressive delay, a broader language difficulty, or part of a wider developmental profile — and the appropriate support can start immediately.
The 'wait until 3 to see if they catch up' approach is not recommended by speech-language professionals for children who show multiple language concerns at 2. Early support produces better outcomes than later catch-up programmes.
What a speech assessment at 2 covers at DARC
DARC's speech assessment for a 2-year-old covers receptive language (what the child understands), expressive language (what they say and how), social communication (eye contact, joint attention, pointing, turn-taking), play-based language, and feeding or oral-motor function if relevant.
The assessment also considers whether speech concerns co-occur with sensory processing differences, motor delays, or social communication patterns that may indicate a broader developmental profile. This is important at 2, when early signs of autism or sensory difficulties may first be clearly visible.
What speech therapy at 2 looks like
Therapy for a 2-year-old at DARC is entirely play-based. Goals are embedded in play routines the child already enjoys — not at a table with flashcards. The therapist models language at the child's current level, creates communication opportunities, and gradually expands the child's communication range.
Parent coaching is central. The DARC speech team teaches parents what to say, how to position themselves, how to respond to the child's communication attempts, and how to create language opportunities during every daily moment. Parents who use these strategies consistently see faster progress.
