What OT does for toddlers
Occupational therapy for toddlers focuses on the daily occupations of early childhood — play, eating, dressing, sleeping, and interacting with the environment. When any of these areas is significantly difficult or distressing, OT can identify why and provide specific support.
Common OT goals for toddlers include developing sensory tolerance (for textures, sounds, movement), building fine motor skills (grasping, stacking, drawing), improving motor coordination (crawling, climbing, throwing), supporting self-feeding and utensil use, and building the tolerance for grooming and dressing tasks.
Signs a toddler may benefit from OT
Consider an OT assessment if your toddler: is very sensitive to touch, sounds, or movement (cries at hair washing, refuses certain textures, avoids playground equipment); is unusually seeking of sensory input (crashes into things, mouths objects beyond expected age); has poor coordination for their age; has significant difficulty with feeding or food texture tolerance; has frequent meltdowns around daily transitions; or is not meeting motor milestones within reasonable ranges.
These signs do not confirm a diagnosis — they indicate that an assessment would clarify what is happening and what, if anything, to do about it.
OT assessment for toddlers at DARC
For toddlers, DARC's OT assessment is observation-based, play-based, and parent-reported. Dr. Aaditya observes the child in structured and unstructured play, assesses motor development and sensory responses, screens primitive reflex status, and builds a functional picture from parent interview covering feeding, sleep, daily routines, and specific concerns.
The assessment does not require the toddler to 'perform' on demand — natural observation during play gives the most accurate information at this age.
Toddler OT at DARC looks like play
OT sessions for toddlers at DARC are entirely play-based. The therapist works through sensory-motor activities, movement challenges, tactile play, and fine motor tasks — all framed as fun, child-directed interaction. Goals are embedded in activities the toddler is motivated to engage with.
Parent coaching is central at this age. Parents are present during or fully briefed after every session, and home activities are always realistic — a few minutes of a specific activity during bath time or play, not separate homework.
