What therapy supports a child with Down syndrome

Children with Down syndrome benefit from early, consistent, multidisciplinary support. Occupational therapy helps with motor development, sensory processing, self-care independence, fine motor skills, feeding, and school participation. Speech therapy supports communication development — spoken language, AAC, feeding and oral-motor function, and social communication.

Special education and parent coaching complete the picture for many families — helping children build learning foundations and giving parents practical strategies for home routines that reinforce therapy goals.

Why early intervention matters most

The brain is most plastic in the early years. Children with Down syndrome who receive consistent OT and speech support before age 3 typically show better communication outcomes, stronger motor development, greater self-care independence, and easier school transitions than those who begin later.

This does not mean starting later is futile — DARC works with children across the full school-age range. But if your child is under 3 and you have not yet started therapy, an assessment now is important.

Low muscle tone — OT's role

Hypotonia (low muscle tone) is nearly universal in children with Down syndrome. It affects feeding in infancy, sitting and walking timelines, fine motor development, and handwriting in school age. Occupational therapy addresses hypotonia through targeted motor activities, postural support strategies, and sensory-motor integration work.

At DARC, the OT assessment identifies which specific motor areas are most limiting the child's daily function and builds goals around those — not a generic gross motor programme applied to all children with low tone.

Speech therapy for Down syndrome

Most children with Down syndrome develop spoken language more slowly than their receptive understanding would predict. They understand far more than they can express. Speech therapy supports expressive language development, articulation clarity, social communication, pragmatic skills, and where needed, AAC or picture communication systems.

DARC's speech team works alongside the OT team, which is important when feeding and oral-motor difficulties co-occur with speech development needs — a common combination in Down syndrome profiles.

What to expect at DARC

Every family begins with Dr. Aaditya's personal consultation. For children with Down syndrome, the assessment covers motor development (fine and gross), sensory processing, primitive reflex status, feeding function, communication profile, self-care, daily routine participation, and parent priorities.

A combined therapy plan is recommended where indicated. Monthly reviews track progress across all therapy areas and adjust the plan as the child develops. Parents receive a home programme that fits real daily routines.

How to get started

Families in Chennai seeking Down syndrome therapy support can book a consultation at DARC Ashok Nagar (+91 80151 52682) or Pallikaranai (+91 88705 29103). Dr. Aaditya's consultation fee is ₹3,000.

If you are unsure whether your child needs OT, speech, or both, the free Child Development Check is the easiest starting point.
